Changes to the Website

After much debate, I’ve decided to split my portfolio into two offerings: Children’s and Illustration Portfolios. The Children’s Portfolio is more geared toward cute and cartoonish work for retail products and books. The Illustration Portfolio will consist of a variety of artwork more suited for adults, past T-shirt and retail product illustration, portraits and personal work. I hope these new categories make it easier to go through my portfolio. Please check out the new pages. I have added some new work and items will be moved around as they settle in. If you are looking for something specific, please let me know through the contact form. New Art will be added as it comes available.

Elepaio

The recent I’iwi bird for the coffee design lead to a suggestion to paint more local birds. I’ve been doing a little research into the different species, along with the Hawaiian myths surrounding them. I always enjoy reading stories about the different myths and the animals they feature. The one I chose to currently work on is the elepaio. I’ve done a few pencil sketches and one color study to attach to this post.

Just from reading about this bird, I really love it for it’s nature but seeing photos and videos of it is truly beautiful. This is a very curious, adaptable and smart bird that makes up for its small size in personality. They’re highly territorial because once they choose a nesting site they will not leave it, and unlike many birds, they love to let you know they are there. They also perform a neat trick called “anting”, which is where they find bugs, plants or snails that are poisonous or stinky and rub them under their wings like deodorant as a form of pesticide to prevent mites and other problems. This is very important because they are currently on the endangered species list here in O’ahu due to mosquito born diseases.

They are commonly featured in Hawaiian myths and legends as messengers of gods. The Hawaiians also carefully watched these birds when choosing logs for canoes. The bird will peck at a bad log that has bugs in it.

Be a Knight…

Threadless is hosting a design competition for TLC for National Bullying Prevention Month. I wanted to show acceptance and love in a way that a child would understand. In a lot of stories, the dragon is a bully toward the villagers and they send in a Knight to slay him, but what if that dragon, like many bullies, was just hurting for some love. In this case, the Knight surprises the dragon with love in the form of a hug. I hope this design encourages kids to be a Knight that’s kind and loving.

If you would like to vote for the design, please visit this link. You may be required to join the Threadless Community.

I have had a couple people ask when the shirt will be for sale. If the design is not chosen for the contest, it will be available in my Artist Shop on Threadless. Sometimes the judging takes awhile so it may be a couple months.

Coffee Design

As an illustrator, you create a lot of ideas and sketches for companies that may not be used for a variety of reasons. This was the case with this drawing I did a few years ago for a coffee company. In many cases, the idea is never developed, but sometimes the drawing resurfaces, so I create what was intended with a generic business name for my portfolio. In this case, the name is the magical location of the beautiful i’iwi bird, the ohia-lehua flower and where Kona coffee is grown.

I hope you enjoy the design. It is available on shirts and sundries through my Threadless Artist Shop link in the About Page.

Portrait Commission

This is the final portrait commission I’d been working on. It was painted from reference photos, provided by the commissioner, using Procreate.

I use the same process for acrylic or digital paintings. I do a detailed drawing and value study first. Then, I paint in the base colors and work from thin to thick.

Updates and Fan Art

I usually do not do fan art but I was inspired by the new lore come out for Destiny 2. This is an in-progress project for me between commissions, the side job, the business here and painting for the up coming show this Fall. It’s created in Procreate using a MaxPack MaxU 600 Series Pencil brush. I recently purchased the brush set from Max Ulichney for a portrait commission. I absolutely LOVE these brushes! They’re the closest I’ve found to how I paint with real paint digitally. I would highly commend them.

On to updates! The next miniature painting will be a still life and should be in-progress by next week. I’m currently working on a private portrait commission. I will be asking if it’s ok to post so you may be seeing it soon. I’m also working on putting the Dragonfish Art on the All-over-Print tees and also the cut and sew tees that are now available on Threadless. There are a couple projects in the air I’m waiting on. More on those later. I like to verify it’s green lit before I post about it. That’s it in a nutshell, wishing everyone a great week.

Quick Tips For Drawing Hands

I’ve been working on a digital portrait commission that includes some hand drawing. It made me think a quick tip tutorial may be helpful to anyone who struggles with drawing hands. If you like this and would like to see more, or if you would like to know how to draw something specific, please let me know and I may do a tutorial or tip sheet on it in the future.

New SUP Acrylic Painting

I believe this one is done for now. It’s 7 x 5” acrylic painting on a cradled wood panel. I still have to apply a varnish. I find it’s easier to photo paintings before the varnish is applied. I’ll be taking some nicer photos of this one when the weather clears up outside. Hope you enjoy the colors and how they play on the water as much as I did.

Now on Google!

We’re a small local business so it was an exciting moment to get a Google My Business Page! I apologize for no location or hours at this time. We do our work in a very teeny tiny home office so we aren’t ready for visitors yet. Although I am most often working, hours are dependent on current workload. It’s best to call and leave a detailed message so we can book an appointment for coffee with you.

News and Updates!

I just wanted to post an update for you.

I have a couple projects in the works that I can’t post yet. I’m hoping I get the green light this week so cross your fingers for me. They loved what I showed them but the higher up approval process can take time.

I’m currently talking with another client about possible work as well. They have introduced me to Twitch, which after some research, I’ve found I can actually live stream from my iPad! This is pretty cool so I’m looking into it for possible live drawing and tutorials in the future.

I’m also still working on this websites searchability. I’ve added a testimonial slider at the bottom of the page. I’ll be updating it as I find more recommendations and reviews. If you’ve purchased something in the past or I’ve done work for you, please use the contact form to send me a review, your url link and a star rating if you’d like 1-5 and I will update it to the slider. As always, please share this site with others to help me improve web search results. I’m a one woman show and it’s hard to make an impression.

I’m also in the process of securing a printer. Mine failed again so I need to look into other options. The good news is I may be able to offer affordable prints soon in my Shop. More on this later. It’s still in the works.

I want to give a huge thank you to followers and friends who have stuck with me over the years. Thank you for your patience and kindness. I’m wishing all of you a great week.
